The “figurine of wonder” is placed in front of the Nativity Grotto, with open arms to signify admiration and astonishment for the miracle of birth and regeneration; it represents the spirit of childhood, candid and free of malice.
According to a Provençal legend, a shepherd went to worship Baby Jesus without bearing gifts, and for this reason he was reprimanded by the other shepherds. The Virgin Mary, then, told him to ignore them because he too had brought a precious gift: Wonder. She said: “You came into this world to be amazed, and the world will always be amazing as long as there will be people like you, who will still be capable of being amazed!”
