The Innkeeper has a deep meaning: in the Neapolitan nativity scene he is the incarnation of Evil and the Devil. The devil has always shown himself in disguise to mankind: his aim is to draw them towards evil without them realising it, and to eventually reveal himself only when he has achieved this. In the nativity scene, the innkeeper draws people to his tavern and there, helped by the inebriation brought by food and wine, he dazes the conscience and prevents men from realizing that not much far away the Son of God is being born, generating the greatest mystery of all time.
